I’ve been meaning to write about Tristan Clopet for some time now. I had the pleasure of meeting his father this past winter to the tune of a wonderfully inspiring conversation. I can certainly see why Tristan has done as well as he has with such a confident force behind him. Through my oft mentioned friend, David Chaitt, I was able to meet Tristan and I’d even go so far as to say we’re friends (except for those times he grills me on not going out on a work night. I’m sorry, we can’t all be coooool musicians. Kidding, kidding).
I’ll be honest. When I first heard his music, I thought he was your average singer/songwriter type: Good voice, nicely written and arranged songs. I hadn’t seen him live yet and I was certainly curious. I finally made it out to a set at Pete’s Candy Shop and suddenly, I started seeing a new Tristan. As a performer, he draws you in. You begin to connect with the music in a way that listening to his EP won’t justify. I started to believe, in Tristan and the magic of his music.
Coincidentally, a couple of months later I was asked to review his EP for Riveting Riffs which you can read right here. The EP was really good but, again, it didn’t properly showcase the talent this young man has. See Tristan hasn’t completely mastered Tristan yet. His influences are quite evident on his album, but it’s when he is solely himself that he and his music shine.
I am so excited and anxious to see what is in the future for this bright up-and-comer. He recently was asked to open twice for the Swell Season, even getting brought up on-stage for the final number. His popularity is slowly growing but to great reviews. Trust me when I say that he is not one to sleep on.
Check out his Living Room Sessions on his Youtube page. Either he alone, or with an accompanist, covers songs from years past or current. His musical abilities certainly fall nothing short of amazing in these videos. Below you can check out his newest video, “42″ by Coldplay.
Enjoy!
